In response to a continuing pattern of anti-chiropractic media efforts such as the “Warning” billboard that recently appeared in Connecticut, the International Chiropractors Association ( ICA) has taken an important and dramatic step and is offering the public a new, positive and accurate message: “Chiropractic is Safe.” A billboard, in the same Connecticut location as the anti-chiropractic message, has been put up by ICA . “ ICA members worldwide are determined to share with the public an accurate, ethical and responsible message about chiropractic,” said ICA President Dr. John K. Maltby. “ ICA 's positive message stands in sharp contrast to the ugly and deliberate deception fueled by anti-competitive motives that characterized the first billboard.”
ICA has also established a website for consumers, offering factual information on chiropractic safety and effectiveness, and contrasting factual and well-referenced information on the risks of many standard medical procedures. Now on-line at www.chiropracticissafe.org , this website is being constantly updated and improved , so consumers can access responsible information on the vital issue of safety, free from the scare tactics that have so regularly been used by chiropractic's critics and competitors to drive patients away from seeking chiropractic care.
The entire profession was outraged by the highly offensive anti-chiropractic billboard that appeared on June 6, 2005 in Connecticut . This billboard was covered up by the advertising company within 24 hours after the ICA learned of its existence. ICA , its members in Connecticut , its state association affiliate the Connecticut Chiropractic Council, and a host of outraged individual DCs and other organizations responded aggressively to this ugly message, and an important victory was won.
“The all too frequent attacks on our profession falsely alleging safety concerns are not an issue of free speech,” said ICA President Dr. John Maltby. “This is a matter akin to the famous ‘Crying fire in a crowded theatre.' The public is entitled to honest, accurate information on such important issues as safety and effectiveness, and the ICA is determined to provide a strong, accurate message in the face of the offensive and inappropriate efforts we have seen from some of chiropractic's critics and competitors. BEFORE

The ICA-sponsored “Chiropractic is Safe” billboard is now visible in the same location as the “Warning” message.
AFTER

The ICA has plans to expand this campaign with additional billboards placed around the nation funded by local groups of ICA members, corporate sponsors and other allied organizations . State and local chiropractic organizations and associations can also participate in this program by sponsoring the placement of these billboards in their community. DCs interested in participating in this campaign should contact the ICA via e-mail at chiro@chiropractic.org .
In addition to the billboard the ICA has also printed an initial 10,000 “Chiropractic is Safe” bumper stickers to further spread the important safety message. These stickers will be available to ICA members and anyone who contributes to the program. They will also be distributed at a host of upcoming chiropractic events where ICA officials will be making presentations on this new campaign.
