"E-FACTS" REPORT FROM THE ICA PRESIDENT, D.D. HUMBER, D.C., F.I.C.A

DR. MICHAEL SCHMIDT NAMED INTERIM PRESIDENT OF LIFE UNIVERSITY:

Life University's board of trustees has appointed Dr. Michael J. Schmidt, former Dean of the College at Life Chiropractic West from 1991 to 2001, interim president of Life University.  Dr. Schmidt began his tenure on July 15th.   "The members of the board of trustees are grateful Dr. Schmidt has agreed to serve as interim president.  His experience in chiropractic education will be invaluable as Life University works to resolve the challenges ahead," commented Dr. Charles E. Ribley, chairman of the board of trustees.  "The board of trustees has complete confidence in Dr. Schmidt, and we look forward to working with him during his leadership at Life."  Prior to his ten years as Dean of the College at Life West, Dr. Schmidt was Chair of the Department of Technique from 1986 to 1990 and served as Chief of Staff of the Life West Clinic from 1982 to 1986.  From 1975 to 1980, Dr. Schmidt served as one of the early faculty members at Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, Georgia.  "Life University has played a large role in my career as a chiropractor and educator," said Dr. Schmidt.  "I appreciate the board of trustees' confidence in me.   I look forward to being at Life again, and to meeting and working with the faculty, staff and students to reach solutions to the barriers we face and to continue the positive impact of Life University."  Dr. Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Upsala College and received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1975. EVERYONE IN THE ICA COMMUNITY WISHES DR. SCHMIDT THE VERY BEST AS HE UNDERTAKES HIS NEW RESPONSIBILITIES AT THE WORLD'S LARGEST CHIROPRACTIC EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION.

THE JULY 18th EDITION OF THE WALL STREET JOURNAL FEATURES A MAJOR STORY ON PUBLIC ACCESS TO MEDICAL PROVIDER HISTORIES, INCLUDING CRIMINAL AND DISCIPLINARY RECORDS.  In a major story entitled "Has Your Doctor Been Sued?" the world's most influential financial and business periodical delves deeply into a growing public demand for information on physicians.  The article leaves no room for doubt about where the author stands on the importance of full disclosure.  The lead paragraph reads as follows:   "Sexual assault. Drive-by shootings. Fraud.  Though it sounds like the local police blotter, these are offences committed by doctors recently disciplined by the Texas state medical board, and now their patients (and prospective patients) can read about them online."   Directing consumers to a new website, www.questionabledoctors.org, the paper strongly supports the consumer's need to know and the ways and means to find out.  THIS STORY IS NOT ALL GOOD NEWS FOR CHIROPRACTIC, HOWEVER, BECAUSE CHIROPRACTIC CRITIC DR. STEPHEN BARRETT AND HIS QUACKWATCH ARE ALSO CITED.  ICA, on the other hand, has always maintained a zero tolerance for fraudulent activities, sexual misconduct or other breaches of the public trust and continues to urge all chiropractic practitioners to honor the profession with the highest ethical and clinical standards, and to always remain within the professional boundaries established by the laws authorizing the practice of chiropractic.  The world is watching all health professions, but it is clear from the tone and content of this article that medicine is now under the behavioral microscope like never before, and the consumer can only benefit.  ICA'S CODE OF ETHICS IS AVAILABLE ONLINE AT www.chiropractic.org.

LIFELONG ICA ACTIVIST, CHIROPRACTIC EDUCATOR AND LEADER ELMER CROWDER, DC, FICA PASSED AWAY EARLIER THIS WEEK.  Dr. Crowder, affectionately known as "Bud" died of cancer on July 15th and is being remembered in services today and tomorrow in Davenport, Iowa.   Dr. Crowder was a 1947 graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractic and was granted the Philosopher of Chiropractic degree in 1961.  He achieved an impressive range of other honors and distinctions, including Distinguished Fellow of the ICA (FICA) in 1967, Fellow in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic in 1999, and numerous distinguished service awards from the ICA.  He is the only doctor of chiropractic to receive an honorary membership in the Legion of Chiropractic Philosophers.  Dr. Crowder was active in ICA throughout his professional life and made significant contributions to every program on which he worked.  He was one of the original members of ICA's Committee on Definitions and Policies which sought to articulate in detail ICA's definitive stance on the critical issues of chiropractic.  His greatest contributions to chiropractic came through his practice and his years of service at Palmer College as an administrator, teacher and role model for generations of chiropractors.   Dr. Crowder served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II, flying 31 missions over Germany.  His courage in service to the nation was recognized with the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.   Dr. Crowder is survived by his wife, Dr. Juanita Nichols Crowder, who graduated in the same class from Palmer, and a daughter, Ann.  Dr. Crowder will be missed by us all, but the example he set and the principles for which he fought all of his life will endure.
