ICA's 12th ANNUAL PEDIATRICS CONFERENCE ANOTHER RESOUNDING SUCCESS - Twelve More Doctors join ICA's elite group of Pediatric Diplomates: Doctors and students from across the U.S. and Canada gathered at the Wyndham at Canal Place in New Orleans November 22-24th for the ICA Pediatric Council's 12th Annual Conference which attendees rated as "Excellent." "It was great," said one doctor from Iowa and a first time attendee, "I can't wait for next year." The ICA Pediatrics Conference has over the years acquired a reputation for educational excellence and this year the program was, according to the attendees "more outstanding than ever." Besides the excellent program doctors and students got a chance to network with colleagues, visit old friends and have a great time in "the Big Easy". The conference, co-sponsored by Palmer College of Chiropractic, included 12 speakers, five research paper presenters and offered over 21 hours of continuing education.
The educational program started with a packed-house on Friday morning and a welcoming address by Dr. Joan Fallon, chair of ICA's Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics. Dr. Peter Fysh, vice-chair of the Pediatrics Council, taught the first session on examination and evaluation of the newborn followed by Dr. Carol Phillips who spoke on chiropractic and pregnancy and Dr. Maxine McMullen rounded out the morning with the topic, "Breastfeeding: the impact on the physiological and psychological development of the child." Friday afternoon featured adjustive/technique workshops on cranio-sacral adjusting with Dr. Carol Phillips; adjusting the pregnant patient with Dr. Sharon Vallone; and adjusting the newborn/infant with Dr. Richard Statler. Pediatric Diplomates Dr. Janet Cuhel and Dr. Lois Ladd were next on tap with, "How to work with other professionals" and "Developmental milestones: abnormals and normals."
Saturday's schedule began with Barbara Loe Fisher, president and co-founder of the National Vaccine Information Center, who spoke on childhood vaccinations and informed consent. Pediatric Diplomate Dr. Donna Craft taught a session on risk factors in adjusting the child, followed by more adjusting technique workshops and Dr. Lora Tanis, secretary-treasurer of the Pediatrics Council, who lead an interactive session on special cases from a pediatric practice that included discussion on plagiocephaly, torticollis, enuresis and special needs. Sunday morning's educational program featured five research papers presented by pediatric diplomates. An informative panel discussion and review featuring all the weekend's speakers brought the conference to a final close.
A highlight of the weekend was the Pediatric Diplomate Commencement and Luncheon held on Saturday afternoon for all attendees, along with family and friends of the graduates. Twelve doctors passed the ICA Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics' Diplomate Exam in July 2002 and were presented with their diplomas at the November 23rd ceremony. The new diplomates are: Dr. Elizabeth Carpenter (Pennsylvania), Dr. Anne Marie Coryell (Pennsylvania), Dr. Peri Dwyer (Florida), Dr. Dale Fairchild (New Jersey), Dr. Keri Kelly (Pennsylvania), Dr. Alaina Rowswell-Kulikowski (New York), Dr. Dennis Mariano (Pennsylvania), Dr. Jennifer Murphy (North Carolina), Dr. Julie Niedwick (Pennsylvania), Dr. Kathleen Smith (Pennsylvania), Dr. Christa Velos (Illinois) and Dr. Jason Yusavage (Pennsylvania). In delivering the commencement address valedictorian Dr. Anne Marie Coryell thanked the instructors and her classmates individually for contributing to making her three years in the program so special and unforgettable. She encouraged each of them to use their gifts in helping improve the lives of their little patients. It was all in all an extraordinary weekend and if you missed it this year, mark your calendars now for next year's conference, which will be held Nov. 7-9, 2003 in Squaw Valley (Lake Tahoe), CA. CHIROPRACTIC VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE HOLDS SECOND MEETING: Dr. Michael McLean, member of the ICA Board of Directors and member of the Congressionally mandated Chiropractic Advisory Committee, reported that the Advisory Committee held its 2nd meeting in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Veterans Affairs headquarters Dec. 4th and 5th. DEATH AND INJURY FROM MEDICAL ERRORS FEATURED IN MAJOR STORY IN THE WASHINGTON POST: Despite efforts to make improvements, little has changed since the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published its landmark study on the massive rate of medical errors in the United States three years ago. According to The Washington Post story titled "No End to Errors", published on December 3rd, "There's a lot of talk, but no significant progress. The reasons, observers say, include fierce resistance by doctors and hospitals to mandatory reporting and other Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations, a lack of oversight by the federal government and the absence of an effective consumer lobby. As a result, experts contend, it is doubtful that patients checking into most of America's 5,200 hospitals are any less likely to be killed or injured than they were on Nov. 29, 1999, when the (IOM) report was issued." For the full text of this alarming and revealing progress report on medical errors, problems that, according to the IOM, "kill more Americans than breast cancer, traffic accidents or AIDS", go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58443-2002Nov30.html or call ICA at 1-800-423-4690.

EUROPEAN UNION MOVES CLOSER TO TOTAL BAN ON TOBACCO ADS: The Health Ministers of the 15-member nations of the European Union voted on Dec. 2nd to adopt a new rule that will ultimately lead to a total ban on tobacco advertising in all Union countries. The new rule adopted this month outlaws ads in newspapers, magazines, the radio, the Internet and bans tobacco companies from sponsoring high profile events like Formula One racing, tennis and football. Television advertising of tobacco products was banned some years ago. Member nations of the Union are now obliged to incorporate the new law into their own national laws by July of 2005. ICA continues to be active in the World Health Organization (WHO) tobacco control efforts and urges all doctors of chiropractic to make tobacco use education and information a standard part of their patient education programs.
