CANADIAN INQUEST BACK IN FULL SWING: The highly publicized "Lewis" inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Lana Lewis, an individual who had been under chiropractic care, resumed on September 9, 2002 after a summer recess. The Lewis inquest initially opened on April 22, 2002 in Toronto, Ontario before a 5-member jury. This case has been used in a massive media campaign by chiropractic's critics and competitors to try and influence public attitudes toward the profession throughout Canada. Throughout the many months of the inquest, the Canadian chiropractic organizations have maintained a dignified, dedicated and well-grounded effort to address the facts of the case and to defend the safety of chiropractic on the basis of those facts. Major presentations by chiropractic witnesses have been made in recent weeks and a full description of that testimony and continuing updates are available from the Canadian Chiropractic Association at www.ccachiro.org, "MEDIA". In a late development, Dr. Murray Katz, a well-known critic and anti-chiropractic activist, who had previously been denied legal standing to appear at the inquest by the coroner, has lost an appeal to the Divisional Court seeking to overturn the coroner's initial decision. This is a major step forward for the objectivity of the hearing process because of the acknowledged hostility and prejudice of Dr. Katz towards the chiropractic profession, and his complete lack of expertise on chiropractic.
DR. GERRY CLUM TO PRESENT IMPORTANT HIPAA INFORMATION AT REGIONAL WORKSHOPS: ICA and Life Chiropractic College West are teaming up to bring Dr. Gerry Clum, one of chiropractic's most insightful and able minds, to locations throughout the nation, (including Indiana, Thursday, November 14th from 1:30-5:30 PM at the Marriott Courtyard Indianapolis Airport) to present half-day programs on the new HIPAA requirements. There is much misinformation circulating and too many DCs have mistaken assumptions about a federal program that will most certainly impact them in 2003. Dr. Clum and a team of legal and regulatory experts have carefully examined this new law and can offer you a definitive, clear and practical pathway to compliance, without having to spend the large amounts of money some companies are demanding.
The new HIPAA law (HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) will require certain practical steps to guard patient confidentiality. Dr. Clum will walk participants through the compliance process step by step, giving you the detailed background from the regulations and the statute for each obligation you have as a health care professional, and providing the opportunity for you to leave the seminar with your office compliance plan well underway. The registration fee includes a take-home package, with the regulations and forms on CD-ROM, which contains the information you will need to begin your compliance efforts.

PALMER CHANCELLOR MICHAEL CRAWFORD TO RETIRE: Palmer College, Davenport, Iowa has announced that the Palmer Board of Trustees has accepted the request of Chancellor Michael E. Crawford, to retire. Chancellor of the Palmer Chiropractic University System since its inception in 1991, Mr. Crawford's retirement will be effective July 1, 2003, drawing to a close a distinguished 35-year career in higher education. Jointly with Mr. Crawford's announcement, Vickie A. Palmer, Chair of the Palmer Board of Trustees, issued a statement thanking the Chancellor for his "tremendous contributions to the cause of Palmer Chiropractic and the development of the Palmer Chiropractic University System."
"Having been with Palmer the last decade has been an exciting and rewarding time," said Mr. Crawford. "Palmer's future prospects are bright." "Mr. Crawford has demonstrated a passionate commitment to both educational excellence and the chiropractic mission. It was with considerable regret that the Board accepted Mr. Crawford's plan to retire," said Ms. Palmer. She added that she and the Board executive committee would be working on a plan to name a successor before he retires. Mr. Crawford, who had extensive experience as an educational administrator for multi-campus institutions before joining Palmer, was hired to apply that expertise when Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, Calif., were brought together under a single Board of Trustees in 1991. The creation of a new campus in Florida, which opened its doors in Port Orange on Oct. 7 this year, was a logical extension of the Board's original multi-campus vision for the University System. "All the Palmer colleges have the same philosophy, policies and practices, and will have a common curriculum in the near future," Mr. Crawford said. Also during the Crawford tenure, the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research, the Palmer Institute for Professional Advancement and the Palmer Foundation for Chiropractic History were established as separate entities of the University System. Palmer also became more involved internationally, working to support chiropractic education in Brazil and New Zealand. "During my remaining months as chancellor," he said, "The Board of Trustees expects me to be involved in a number of projects." After Mr. Crawford retires, he will continue to work for the University System in a consulting capacity for a period of time. ICA wishes Mr. Crawford and Palmer College the very best as they make this important transition.
LIFE UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL COACHES TRAINING PROGRAM: Olympic coaches from fifteen countries were on hand at Life University the week of October 23rd to kick off the institution's Coaching Excellence Program. Funded by Olympic Solidarity, a division of the International Olympic Committee, this innovative program is making it possible for many of these Olympic team coaches to attend the University's month-long seminar. The Life program is one of only four in the world sanctioned by Olympic Solidarity for use of its coach training scholarships. The other programs, long renowned among elite athletes, are in Barcelona, Budapest, and Paris. Life has been working on this initiative since before the Atlanta Games in 1996, discussing these proposals with Olympic Solidarity. "I'm very pleased to be here at this great center," stated Byambajay Battulga, of Mongolia. "The information is at a high level and very interesting. This is good for me because wrestling is a top sport in Mongolia and there are many, many coaches. "
The new program targets basketball, soccer, and track and field, along with a new martial arts segment to be developed in conjunction with Master Ji Jian Cheng of Zhejiang University in China. "People are going to be more and more interested in the Chinese culture leading up to the Olympics in Beijing," said program coordinator Mr. Michael Spino. "We're ahead of the curve in the sense that we're defining the relationship between Eastern and Western thought as applied to Olympic sports. A coach coming here will get the sports science and biomechanics, but he's also going to get how to get in touch with peak performance and mental energy." ICA's Council on Fitness and Sports Health Science has provided custom polo shirts for the program participants, along with information on chiropractic and performance enhancement. ICA wishes Life the very best in this great new international outreach program.
