LIFE UNIVERSITY LOSES CCE ACCREDITATION: The world of chiropractic is reacting in a wide variety of ways to the announcement on October 20th that the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) had upheld the CCE Commission on Accreditation's initial decision to withdraw accreditation from Life University's College of Chiropractic. The upheaval caused by this decision will certainly exacerbate the withering of the chiropractic educational system, with the number of chiropractic students in the United States dropping already. The chiropractic profession, over the past decades, has been propelled forward by the rapid growth of the numbers of chiropractic practitioners. Chiropractic emerged as a major force in health care in the United States only when a critical mass was reached where there were tens of thousands of DCs, capable of caring for millions of patients, and able to compete effectively in the health care market place nationwide. The position of the chiropractic profession in the increasingly competitive and complex health care world can so easily be undermined and destabilized that it is my hope that all decision-makers, both on the part of Life and on the part of CCE, will recognize the urgent need to move quickly to restore Life's accreditation status, for the sake of the general health of chiropractic, and for the public chiropractic serves. ICA hopes that Life will be afforded that accommodation and assistance it needs to rapidly attain accredited status.
DR. GERRY CLUM TO PRESENT IMPORTANT HIPAA INFORMATION AT INDIANA WORKSHOP: ICA and the ICA of Indiana are teaming up to bring Dr. Gerry Clum, one of chiropractic's most insightful and able minds, to Indiana (Thursday, November 14th from 1:30-5:30 PM at the Marriott Courtyard Indianapolis Airport) to present a half-day program on the new HIPAA requirements. There is much misinformation circulating and too many DCs have mistaken assumptions about a federal program that will most certainly impact them in 2003. Dr. Clum and a team of legal and regulatory experts have examined every detail of this new law and can offer you a definitive, clear and practical pathway to compliance, without having to spend the large amounts of money some of the practice management companies are demanding for the same or less accurate information.
The new HIPAA law (HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) will require certain practical steps to guard patient confidentiality. Dr. Clum will walk participants through the compliance process step by step, giving you the detailed background from the regulations and the statute for each obligation you have as a health care professional, and providing the opportunity for you to leave the seminar with your office compliance plan well in hand. The registration fee includes a take-home package, with the regulations and forms on CD-ROM, which contains all the information you need to complete and monitor your compliance efforts.
This is your chance to learn about this new law from an objective source, presented by one of the greatest minds in chiropractic. This program is a tremendous bargain because it is being brought to you as a service by ICA and ICAI, not to profit from your fears and concerns over these new rules. Our goal is to make sure that you and your practice are in compliance with the new rules, in the most efficient, cost-effective manner possible. For more information or to register by phone call ICA at 1-800-423-4690.
NEW AUTO HEADREST RESTRAINTS FOUND TO REDUCE NECK INJURIES: The October 22nd edition of The Wall Street Journal carried an article that reported that "smarter head restraints" have been found to significantly reduce "neck injury insurance claims in vehicles that offer them". New restraints conform to the contours of the cervical spine and extend further than standard equipment. Whiplash injuries which are the direct result of auto crashes effect approximately 800,000 people annually and account for more than $7 billion in health care costs, the lion's share borne by auto insurance companies. ICA has strongly supported the research and development efforts of Cervigard, an innovative chiropractic company founded by Dr. Ron Dellanno of New Jersey that has developed a state-of-the art head restraint specifically designed to protect the cervical spine. Doctors of chiropractic care for large numbers of whiplash patients and the recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found:
New research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety finds that some new designs of seats and head restraints are reducing neck injuries among car occupants involved in rear-end crashes. This is the first U.S. study to measure the effectiveness in real-world crashes of some of the innovative designs that manufacturers are beginning to introduce... The key to reducing whiplash injury risk in rear-end crashes is to keep an occupant's head and torso moving together. The redesigned seats and head restraints are all intended to reduce the differential motion of the head and torso. The question addressed in the Institute's new research is whether these redesigned seats and head restraints are doing a better job of reducing neck injuries in rear-end crashes, compared with the designs in older models of the same cars. There's evidence that many of the new designs are working.
This new study should be high-priority reading and more information is available on-line at http://www.hwysafety.org/news_releases/2002/pr102202.htm.
The International Chiropractors Association conducts a highly respected postgraduate educational program on whiplash and spinal trauma, presented by Dr. Dan Murphy, which has, for more than a decade, set the standard of clinical exploration and research in such injuries. We also believe that prevention of such injuries should be a very high public policy priority since treatment is expensive, complicated and requires a very long recovery period during which a whiplash injury patient is subject to limitations on activities, including work, often great physical pain, and other limiting factors.
ICA will continue to urge the adoption of the breakthrough technology pioneered by Cervigard and Dr. Dellanno as an urgent public health priority and we are pleased to see these issues start to get the attention of the public and the media. Dr. Dellanno also recently contributed to a major new book entitled Whiplash, which breaks new ground in the understanding of this common spinal trauma injury. This new text is available through Hanley & Belfus, Inc. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (215-546-7293) and is a must-read for all DCs who see patients suffering from this devastating injury.
